About Disaster Riffs: Our Mission, Focus, and Team
We still remember the first time the floor at a sweaty Toronto basement show felt like it might give out under a wall of down-tuned riffs. Between sets, someone handed us a lukewarm tallboy, a stranger shouted a request for a Comeback Kid deep cut, and we knew we’d found our people. That same feeling hit us years later on a cross-Canada road trip to a metal festival, sleeping in the car outside Regina and waking up to frost on the windows just to catch a stacked lineup. Disaster Riffs exists because that passion never wore off.
Our Mission: Championing Canadian Heavy Music
Our mission is simple: amplify metal concerts Canada-wide and give hardcore bands the honest, opinionated coverage they deserve. From Vancouver’s Modified Ghost to Montreal’s Heavy Montreal, we treat Canadian heavy music as a scene worth documenting seriously, not just a stopover on an international tour routing.
Why We Started Disaster Riffs
We got tired of reading the same recycled press releases. Local promoters, DIY venues, and small-town bands were putting on incredible shows with almost zero coverage. So we started writing the pieces we wanted to read: firsthand, unfiltered, and rooted in the actual experience of standing in the crowd.
Supporting Local Scenes from Halifax to Victoria
Our coverage stretches coast to coast. That means spotlighting a Halifax basement gig one week and a Victoria record release the next. We believe the health of the national scene depends on the smaller rooms as much as the big festival stages.
Editorial Focus: Southern Metal, Hardcore, and Guitar Gear
We write about the music that moves us and the gear that makes it loud. Our editorial team digs into southern metal, hardcore, and the equipment behind those tones, always with a fan’s ear and a player’s curiosity.
Genre Deep Dives: Sludge, Doom, and Southern Grooves
Southern metal and sludge are our bread and butter. We trace the lineage from Weedeater and Bongzilla through to the Canadian bands carrying that tar-thick torch today. If it’s slow, heavy, and soaked in groove, we’re already listening.
Gear Reviews: Pedals, Amps, and Riffs That Matter
Gear shapes the riff, so we test and talk about it honestly. Our favourites include:
- Traynor guitar amps, a Canadian workhorse we’re proud to see on local stages
- Orange amps and their unmistakable midrange bark
- Sunn O))) rigs for players chasing pure volume and dread
- Fuzz and overdrive pedals that define the southern metal sound
Our Team Approach: First-Person, On the Ground
We don’t write from a desk. Our editorial team is at Toronto live music shows at The Garrison and Toronto’s Bovine Sex Club, interviewing bands backstage, and sharing personal opinions. No corporate fluff, just real talk from people who were actually there.
Meet the Writers and Photographers
Our editorial team is a rotating crew of writers, photographers, and lifelong show-goers. We all play, collect gear, or spend too much money on merch, which keeps our perspective grounded in the scene rather than hovering above it.
How We Cover Shows and Festivals
We cover shows with a camera in one hand and a notebook in the other. Expect photo galleries, honest recaps, and interviews that go beyond the standard promo questions, whether it’s a packed club night or a massive weekend at Heavy Montreal.
Disaster Riffs is a community-driven blog for fans, by fans. We’re here to celebrate Canadian heavy music, argue about tone, and shine a light on the bands and venues that keep this scene alive. If you’ve got a story to tell, a show to review, or a riff worth sharing, we want to hear from you.
FAQ
Is Disaster Riffs an official site for any band or festival?
No. We’re an unofficial heavy music blog run by fans. We cover metal concerts across Canada and share our own opinions, but we’re not affiliated with any band, label, or festival.
Do you only cover shows in Toronto?
Not at all. While we spend a lot of time at Toronto live music venues like The Garrison and Toronto’s Bovine Sex Club, we cover scenes from Halifax to Victoria, including festivals like Heavy Montreal and Vancouver’s Modified Ghost.
Can I pitch a story or review to your team?
Yes. We welcome pitches from fans, photographers, and writers. If you’ve got a show recap, a gear review, or an interview idea, reach out and our editorial team will take a look.
What genres do you focus on most?
Our core focus is southern metal, sludge, doom, and hardcore bands. We also cover guitar gear from brands like Traynor, Orange, and Sunn O))), since tone is part of the story.
